Welcome to the West Wight Arts Association

Piatti String Quartet and Pianist Thomas Luke - Saturday, May 11th

Following the sell out success of the Kliphuis Trio concert, West Wight Arts Association’s last concert of the season will be given by the Piatti String Quartet and Pianist Thomas Luke on Saturday May 11th in the Memorial Hall, Freshwater, starting at 7pm.

The distinguished Piatti Quartet are widely renowned for their ‘profound music making’ (The Strad) and their ‘lyrical warmth’ (BBC Music Magazine). Since their prizewinning performances at the 2015 Wigmore Hall String Quartet Competition, they have performed all over the world and made international broadcasts from many countries.

Born on the Isle of Wight and educated at Ryde School, Thomas was the keyboard category winner of the prestigious BBC Young Musician 2020 competition. He has been hailed as a “trailblazer” by Steinway and Sons, and his award-winning performances, widely praised for their exceptional musicality and sincerity, have been broadcast on national television and radio.

The quartet will play the contemporary composer Charlotte Harding’s Iorsa including a recently composed short addition which will constitute a world première. They will then play Mendelssohn’s passionate quartet in F minor before being joined after the interval by Thomas Luke for Dvořák’s lyrical Piano Quintet in A major. The previously advertised quartet by Ina Boyle will not be played as the new additions to the Harding piece would make the first half of the concert too long.

We shall not be selling Season Tickets for next season at this concert but our membership secretary Jackie Warner will be in contact about them in the near future.

Tickets at £16.00, students and children £2.00, are available from our ticket page or Totland Parish Office on 756028.

Please note the concert starts at 7.00pm.

West Wight Arts Association Bursary for young music students on the Island

Twelve young Island musicians have been awarded grants to further their musical studies by West Wight Arts Association.

The recipients range from 11 to 18 and played a wide variety of instruments or sang to a panel of WWAA trustees on Saturday February 24th. They also answered questions about their music making and what they would spend an award on; their answers ranged from help with funding further music lessons to better instruments or equipment.

The panel were treated to performances on piano, saxophone, drums, clarinet, oboe, violin, flute and voice from students from six different schools on the Island. The judges were deeply impressed by the standards achieved and the aspirations expressed by the musicians.

We had a wonderful response to our initial appeal for Island music students and it was very hard to shortlist applicants to start with. Then on the audition day it was very difficult to decide who our major award winners should be as the standard was so high, but we were able to give everyone something.

The concert was one of the best I have been to anywhere, the gut stringing added to their brilliant interpretation of the Mozart which was thrilling.
Absolutely wonderful that music of this quality is available in (dare I say it) sleepy old Freshwater. I wish WWAA every success in the future.
I thought it absolutely fabulous and their interpretation masterful and magical – I thought Amadeus himself would have been smiling.

Understudy to Treasurer

West Wight Arts Association is in need of someone to act as an understudy or assistant to our treasurer Dick Dawson whose workload has increased greatly over the years he has been doing it. Someone with good IT skills would be ideal, interested in classical music and the concerts we put on and prepared to become a Trustee of the Association. We hold Trustees’ meetings once a month during the concert season, otherwise it would entail working with Dick with a view to taking over some of his tasks in the longer term. WWAA is a thriving organisation of which it is very rewarding to be part.

If you are interested please see Judith or Dick at a concert or contact one of them at dick@dpdawson.co.uk or juhunt@btinternet.com or ring Dick on 760655 or Judith on 07740 427955
